Absence from School

Absences from School

We would respectfully request all parents to inform us of the reason for their child's absence from School by either telephone or letter. Should a child have a hospital, dental, or clinic appointment then we would hope to be informed by the parents of their arrangements for their child to be collected from school.

Children should be in school no later than 9.00am. If children are late it may have to be noted in the register as an "unauthorised absence." These absences refer to occasions when children arrive after registration is completed or when children are absent and the school receives no explanation for this, at the time of absence. During the period from September 2000 and May 2001, 1239 unauthorised absences were noted, involving 128 pupils, with at least one such absence.

At Lydgate Junior and Infant School we expect all pupils to attend regularly. Every day out of school is a missed opportunity for learning. A sense of punctuality and its importance is an integral part of the curriculum

Illness

Should a child be ill or have an accident in school, attempts will be made to contact parents. For this reason, it is essential that the school has a telephone number where a parent or guardian can easily be contacted.

If a child is taking medication, if at all possible this should be given at home. If this is not possible, parents will be encouraged to come into school and administer the medication to their child themselves.

Only in exceptional circumstances will staff administer medication.
