Colne Valley Museum

Back

On Thursday 6th. April, 2000 Mrs. Shaw's class went on a visit to Colne Valley Museum in Golcar, Huddersfield. They dressed up in Victorian clothes and spent the day as Victorian children.

The Haigh Family

This is the Haigh family. In the Haigh family there is Sulaiman, Jordan, Emma, Amber, Billy and Amy. The person that is showing us how to do it is Granddad Pearson. We are separating the wool and then we will do some carding to make it into thread.

One of the first jobs a servant girl had to do in the morning was to clean the shoes. The girl had to kneel on a mat to clean the shoes. It was cold because the door was open, but it was a lovely day.

This servant girl is ironing a tea towel. The iron is very hot. A second iron is being heated while she uses the first iron. They didn't have electric irons in those days.

Some young servants sat around a table. Their job was to make sock dolls. Mrs. Lenton and Mrs Thomas helped them and made sure they stuck at their job.

After the tea towels had been washed they had to be put through the mangle to squeeze out all the water. It was quite stiff to turn. After this the towels were hung out on the line to dry and then ironed.
