The Mayor's Visit

Back

 Monday 10th January 2005

The Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Harkin, visited School this morning and was interviewed by the children in both Key Stages. After being shown around the school, Mike and Trevor, the Mayor's assistants told the children about the clothing and mace.

The mace was thought to be a weapon used by the Mayor or his attendants to beat off robbers and thieves. In the Medieval times the mace was made of wood and had spikes on the head of it. Nowadays it is usually made of silver with a golden gilt coated around it. On the head of the mace is a crown along with the Huddersfield Coat of Arms.

Basically the clothing is similar to that of a judge. The red coat has two long and narrow pockets attached to the sleeves for keeping money and taxes in them, so it would be hard for pickpockets to steal the money. The hat is shaped like a pirate's but is worn with the ends facing forward and backwards, which would let the rain drip down the back.
A Year 6 child and a Year 2 child were chosen to be Mayor of Lydgate for the day. Their teachers were ordered to be their attendants and had a number of tasks to do including waiting on their tables at dinner-time.
